About measurements from this server

If you reached this page because you noticed network traffic from this address, here is exactly what it is and how to stop it.
What we are doing
We are academic researchers at Princeton University studying the performance of satellite internet networks (such as Starlink). To do this, this server sends small, low-rate network measurements — for example latency (ping-style timing) and lightweight throughput probes — toward publicly reachable network endpoints.
These measurements record only network performance characteristics (timing, throughput, packet loss). We do not inspect, collect, or store the contents of your traffic, we do not attempt to log in to or access any private system, and we collect no personal information.
Why
The purpose is purely academic and non-commercial: to build better models that forecast satellite-network performance and improve network planning. The work is conducted by the PAWS Lab in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University.
Methodology & ethics
This measurement closely follows an established, peer-reviewed technique from the Internet-measurement community, and we strictly adhere to the ethical considerations described in it:
Liz Izhikevich, Manda Tran, Katherine Izhikevich, Gautam Akiwate, and Zakir Durumeric. 2024. Democratizing LEO Satellite Network Measurement. Proc. ACM Meas. Anal. Comput. Syst. 8, 1, Article 13 (March 2024), 26 pages. https://doi.org/10.1145/3639039
Consistent with that work, we probe only publicly routable network infrastructure — never private systems, the contents of your traffic, or any application or user — we keep probe rates low to avoid any disruption, and we provide the opt-out below for anyone who prefers not to be measured. Because Starlink routes customers through regional carrier-grade NAT points of presence, an observed public IP address localizes at most to a regional PoP, not to any household or street address.
Opt out — no questions asked
If you would prefer that your network or device not be measured, email us the IP address or network range you would like excluded and we will add it to our permanent exclusion list and stop measuring it. Opt-outs are honored promptly and permanently.
